Spotted Lanternfly Still Problematic – But Less So

While spotted lanternflies continue to be a problem here in central Pennsylvania, there is some good news… experts say their numbers may be dropping. The invasive insect, first found in Berks County in 2014, feeds on over 130 plant species and is especially damaging to grapevines. Experts from Penn State say heavy infestations typically last a few years before the pests move on. The bugs are more noticeable right now… in September and October… when their late-season activity peaks. Though they don’t harm humans, they excrete honeydew, which attracts other pests and promotes mold growth. If you find any spotted lanternflies, they say you should squash any you see.
