The Juniata Valley YMCA will host its 14th Annual Benefit Dinner later today at the Burnham Lions Club. Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner starting at 6. The event, featuring auction items like Penn State football tickets and a full vehicle detail, aims to raise over $10,000 for facility upgrades. It’s their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Pennsylvania residents are reporting a decrease in sightings of the invasive spotted lanternfly. The pests, which first appeared in the state in 2014, have caused significant annoyance and damage over the years. However, recent reports suggest fewer encounters with the winged insects. The Illinois Department of Agriculture confirmed a moderate infestation last year, but the trend here in Pennsylvania indicates some relief, and that’s good news!

According to the results of a recent study, Pennsylvania State Police are stopping drivers at similar rates across racial and ethnic groups. Analyzing 450,000 traffic stops from 2023, researchers found no significant disparities in the reasons for stops or the outcomes, such as arrests or searches. State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris hailed the report as a model for transparency and accountability.

PennDOT has a lot going on in Mifflin County this week. Work includes bridge maintenance on Waynesburg Road, where the bridge over Kish Creek will be replaced. A detour includes Routes 655, 4007, and 4004. Shoulder maintenance is underway on Barrville Road; Maple Grove Road; and Back Mountain Road, with flaggers directing traffic during daylight hours. The schedule may change due to weather or other factors.

The Mifflin County School District is seeking to fill a vacancy left by the recent passing of board member Fred Nickel. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in the district for a year, and possess good moral character. Interested residents must submit applications by 9 a.m. on September 3, with interviews set for a special meeting on September 5. The new member will serve until November 2025.
