Honoring Fallen PennDot Workers

On Monday at Soldier’s Grove, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and other agencies gathered to honor roadway workers and promote safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week. The event emphasized the critical need for safe driving through work zones, with this year’s theme being “Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.” Memorials were displayed to honor workers who lost their lives while improving infrastructure. Since 1970, PennDOT has lost 90 workers, and the PA Turnpike has lost 45 since 1940. Last year alone, there were 1,216 work zone crashes and 22 fatalities. The agencies have now implemented a Work Zone Speed Safety Camera program to enforce safe driving behaviors. This program they say, has already successfully reduced speeding and is hopefully going to improve work zone safety.
