Shapiro’s 1st Executive Order Greeted with Mixed Results

Newley sworn in Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed his first executive order on Wednesday, a move that many observers say simply lowers the bar to qualify as a state worker. On Wednesday, Shapiro removed the requirement for a four year degree to qualify for tens of thousands of jobs in the state government. Shapiro said the order applies to 92% of commonwealth jobs. He said roughly 65,000 positions statewide will now be open to Pennsylvanians regardless of whether they hold a college degree. Shapiro also ordered all executive branch agencies to emphasize skills and experience during the hiring process, and he called for a review of the remaining 8% of jobs that still require a four-year degree.
