Pennsylvania Moves Toward State-run Cannabis Program

A new proposal to legalize recreational cannabis here in Pennsylvania could create the nation’s first state-run cannabis program. The bill, passed Wednesday in the state House by a narrow 102-101 vote, would allow cannabis sales through state-run dispensaries, similar to the Liquor Control Board model for alcohol. It aims to address issues with private dispensaries, such as high THC products and limited small-business investment. While Democratic lawmakers support the measure, Senate Republicans oppose it, and the cannabis industry warns it could disrupt existing businesses. Governor Josh Shapiro has expressed support for the bill, citing potential revenue to address the state’s budget deficit.
