It was 50 years ago today when Hurricane Agnes ravaged much of the northeast, including the Juniata River Valley. While rain was predicted by the National Weather Service that week, no one was prepared for the devastating flooding in which Agnes dropped 12 inches of rain in Lewistown, and the Juniata River rose to 42.1 feet — more than 19 feet above flood stage. Pennsylvania sustained $2 billion in damage, and 50 state residents lost their lives in the floods.
