Central and eastern Pennsylvania will soon witness the return of those loud cicadas, expected to emerge after 17 years underground. The two-inch-long insects will be buzzing across 13 states, including several Pennsylvania counties, in late May to early June, depending on spring temperatures. Wildlife, including birds and mammals, will benefit from this protein-packed food source. Although the emergence may be smaller than previous broods, it offers a unique spectacle as the cicadas will remain active for just a few weeks.
