As autumn settles in, Pennsylvania drivers are urged to exercise caution due to a rise in deer activity. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has issued an alert, noting that deer become increasingly active as they enter their breeding season, known as the “rut.” This surge in movement coincides with the end of daylight saving time, which occurs this coming Saturday night (or early Sunday morning to be more precise) which will result in more vehicles on the roads during dawn and dusk, and those are the peak hours for deer activity. Pennsylvania leads the nation in vehicle-deer collision insurance claims. The game commission advises drivers to slow down and remain alert, as deer often travel in groups. If a deer is hit, reporting the incident is only necessary if the driver wishes to claim the carcass. Motorists are reminded to avoid approaching injured deer and to comply with regulations regarding the transport of deer from Chronic Wasting Disease management areas.
