At the Juniata County Commissioners meeting, Gabe Heckert, chief of Port Royal EMS, highlighted what he referred to as wage disparities affecting local EMS workers. Heckert noted that EMTs in Port Royal start at $14 an hour, while UPMC in Harrisburg offers $17. Paramedics earn $18 an hour in Port Royal, compared to $21 at UPMC. Heckert emphasized the need for community funding to support better wages and cover equipment costs. Currently, Port Royal EMS is an all-paid department with no volunteers. Commissioners also covered other items of business, such as the approval of various administrative actions, including tax exonerations and a $3,000 election security grant.
