New State Police Barracks Coming

Pennsylvania State Police say the time has come to replace the Lewistown barracks in Mifflintown. It’s something that has been talked about a lot in the past, and those conversations have involved potential renovations and upgrades. However, the tragic events that took place there last June, in which one state trooper was killed and another was critically wounded, have caused a big change in the original plans. After the shootings, the plans now are moving toward a total replacement of the barracks, with improved security. Pennsylvania State Police say the very fact that a lone gunman was able to simply drive into the parking lot there and fire a weapon is unacceptable. Now plans are underway to totally replace the current barracks on Stoney Creek Drive with a completely new facility that will be nearly twice as large, and offer more security. The specific location has yet to be decided.
